The Studio of Material Life is a space for collaborative anthropological work, where we conduct ethnographic and sociocultural research work with, for, and on the cultural issues which surround design and materials.
We are postgraduate students and staff based in the Department of Anthropology at UCL (University College London). The majority of projects are conducted as a part of the MA programme in Materials.Anthropology.Design (MAD) with occasional additional projects.
Our work aims to address the issues of designers, materials scientists, architects, craftspeople, and other professions, through developing critical cultural understandings. Our methods range from the ethnographic, to design, to artistic and making skills.
